The Trust receives approaches for funding support from a significant number of individual prisoners in England and Wales.
Trust representatives within designated prisons provide application forms to those men and women who approach them and who appear to fit the Trust’s criteria. See the website's ‘conditions and exclusions’ page.
The application form
An application form may also be downloaded direct from this website. Application forms are accepted by the Trust until the candidate list is full, that is normally, from December – February (for an April decision) and from June – August (for an October decision.)
It is essential that the candidate is eligible according to the Trust’s criteria and that all parts of the form are completed, and that it is endorsed by two referees who hold staff positions as indicated on the final page of the form. If the candidate is ineligible, or parts of the form are incomplete or if an endorsement from one of the specified persons is missing, the form will be rejected.
The interview.
The Trust assessors, the majority of whom are trustees, arrange the interviews with the Hardman Trust representative within the prison and conduct the interview, normally during the periods March/April and September/October each year.
The interview though informal in style is a key aspect of the process. It provides the candidate with the opportunity to discuss the project for which funding has been requested, in more detail face to face with the trustee or assessor.
The decision.
If, at the selection meeting, it is decided an award should be granted, a further decision is made regarding the value of the award and any conditions that should be attached to it.
Notification
Within a week of the decision, the Secretary writes to each candidate individually to inform him or her of the result which for a successful candidate will include information on how the award may be claimed along with an invitation to the award ceremony
The award ceremony
Twice a year an award ceremony is held in one of H.M.Prisons. Award winners attend and may invite friends and relatives. For many it is the first time they have been recognised for any personal achievement and the day of the awards ceremony becomes a 'day to remember'. It is a huge lift to self esteem. Awards have been presented by the former Lord Chief Justice, H.M. Chief Inspector of Prisons, H.M. Director General of the Prison Service and Mr Terry Waite.
