Hardman Trust Awards – conditions and exclusions

The Trustees make awards to individual prisoners comprising:
· a redeemable voucher generally ranging in value from £200 - £700
· a commendatory certificate,
· an invitation to an award ceremony at one of HM Prisons.

The Trustees consider awards to men and women in HM Prisons in England and Wales, irrespective of whether or not they are foreign nationals, provided a satisfactorily completed application form is returned before the applicant leaves the prison.

Awards may be made to prisoners in the latter stages of long term sentences who have:
· shown a special commitment to the process of personal rehabilitation
· a project designed to prepare them better for return to the community; for which they seek financial support.

For men ‘latter stages of long term sentences’ means those who are category C prisoners normally at least 7 years into a 10 year + sentence and also within three years of their EDR or who are category D prisoners normally at least 4 years into a 10 years + sentence:

For women, ‘latter stages of long term sentences’ means generally at least 4 years into a 7 years + sentence

(Men enquiring about the scheme from a Category A establishment or category B prisoners who otherwise fit the criteria, are encouraged to apply to the Trust later on when they have become category C or D prisoners.)

SPECIFIC EXCLUSIONS.

The Trustees do not grant awards to those who are about to be transferred to, or are already residing in, one of the special hospitals.

The Trustees do not grant awards for:

· Car or motorbike driving lessons.
· Clothing, unless specialist clothing for a job placement.
· Musical instruments unless the candidate can show that he or she is likely to move into a career in music after release.
· Computers unless the application includes an endorsement from the governing governor or unless the computer is to be purchased under the supervision of the probation service after release yet still within one year of when the award was granted.

If between the time an award is granted and the award money is claimed the person is transferred back to more secure conditions, the award automatically becomes void. However the opportunity to reapply for future consideration always remains open.
